C’è un famoso detto che dice: “Coloro che non ricordano il passato sono destinati a ripeterlo” oppure: ”Chi non conosce il passato non avrà futuro”. Questi insegnamenti sono profondi. Ci sono grandi lezioni da apprendere dalle vite precedenti dei propri avi che dovremmo imparare in modo di non affievolire la fiamma del nostro cuore ripercorrendo i vecchi errori, ma tenendo sempre ardente il proprio fuoco ascoltando e riscoprendo dentro di sé le esperienze, i collassi e la saggezza accumulata dai nostri antenati.

I nonni in particolare sviluppano con i nipoti una relazione singolare e trasmettono alle generazioni successive profumi, icone di ricordi, sensazioni, affetto, parole, consigli. Immaginiamo il rapporto tra una nipotina deliziosa e sensibile ed un nonno “regista” famoso e stimato nel mondo il cui nome è Vittorio De Sica, sempre in viaggio per lavoro ma che è riuscito a trasmettere alla famiglia quei valori che faranno crescere forti e maturi i frutti di un grande albero che non morirà mai. La prima nipote del grande De Sica è Eleonora Baldwin De Sica figlia di Emilia, Emi, prima bambina di Vittorio avuta dalla moglie Giuditta Rissone. Eleonora ormai è una “grande donna” e professionista che lavora nel cinema. Intervistata a Torino, al Festival del cinema dei giovani esordienti è stato un incontro umano, femminile, commovente, delicato e ricco di ricordi del grande nonno, dai significati profondi:

A quaranta anni dalla morte di suo nonno Vittorio quali tracce e ricordi di Lui sono rimasti dentro di Lei?

L’umiltà di base che credo sia genetica, che nonno mi ha trasmesso attraverso le parole di mia madre Emi. Lei mi ha sempre detto: “Non usare il nome di tuo nonno per fare carriera, così tu farai una tua carriera e andrai avanti per i tuoi meriti, ma hai il gene di tuo nonno che ti appartiene, quindi chi lo scopre ti apprezzerà ancora di più e anche professionalmente non c’è bisogno di giustificare la propria presenza dicendo sono la nipote di…”. Anche mia madre ha svolto sempre una vita riservata, dietro le quinte lontana dai riflettori, quindi la risposta è l’umiltà di base che è un’eredità della mia famiglia… anche di mio nonno…

Sua madre Emilia, una vita riservata ma spesso “vittima” indiretta della celebrità del padre.

Si mio nonno come tutti sanno in un periodo in cui il divorzio era vietato era bigamo e mamma ha sofferto tanto di questo, ha patito tanto… non di gelosia ma più che altro per colpa delle compagne di classe che le facevano trovare sul banco il giornale dove c’era scritto che Suo padre si sarebbe risposato… Provava tanto dolore di questo. Mamma è una donna dall’umanità straordinaria e quando la conoscerai ti farà impressione, è un clone di mio nonno nella voce, nei denti, nel modo di parlare.

Chi è stato Vittorio De Sica per Eleonora?

Mio nonno è morto quando avevo 7 anni, ricordo piccoli bei momenti, ho digerito e pasticato ogni suo film migliaia di volte e ancora piango dall’emozione quando vedo certe scene: il bambino che smuove la mano del padre in Ladri di biciclette… come fai a non smuovere una emozione! Sempre ci sarà anche se sai che è una cosa che è stata scritta nel salotto dove andavamo tutte le domeniche, con me con i piedi sul divano nella casa di mamma. Dal punto di vista umano mi ha dato grande semplicità, mai farsi belli di niente.. Mi ricordo che quando vari giornalisti o alunni o giovani registi, film maker che volevano affacciarsi nel mondo del cinema chiedevano: “Maestro cosa serve per fare il cinema? Lui rispondeva: “La salute di ferro” e dico è vero, poiché il cinema è prima di tutto un impegno fisico importantissimo poi il sacro fuoco, il talento, la voglia di raccontare, ma prima di tutti la salute di ferro. Questi sono i racconti di mamma, questa è una cosa molto tenera.

Quale attore amava molto ne aveva uno in particolare?

Lui lavorava con attori che non erano attori quindi come faceva a spiegare loro come lavorare? Dovevano ascoltare quello che lui voleva. Nonno aveva una grande passione per gli attori, li amava perché anche lui lo era stato e lo era.

Lui li capiva ed è qualcosa che i giovani registi devono imparare, si può impostare la scena, l’inquadratura, tutto, ma prima devi parlare con l’attore. Lui interpretava la scena per ogni attore. Prima interpretava la scena e gli attori che non erano attori dovevano replicarla allo stesso modo di come l’aveva recitata Lui, anche per la Loren era così, Lei lo dice sempre, anzi facciamo tanti auguri a Sophia, non è uno scoop: “ Io con le indicazioni di Vittorio sono diventata attrice da Oscar”. Anche nel film Oggi Ieri e Domani sai quella scena dello spogliarello? Pare sia stato filmato molto brevemente lo spogliarello recitato da nonno durante le prove per la Loren, lo ha fatto tutto lo spogliarello e il direttore della fotografia il grandissimo Giuseppe Lotunno lo ha filmato lo spogliarello di De Sica con la musica, tutto uguale, questo filmato sarebbe da ritrovarlo.

Qual’è stato il rapporto di De Sica con i giovani e i bambini …

Proprio perché amava gli attori e gli interpreti quindi sapeva le difficoltà di cosa significa stare davanti la macchina da presa, questo lo rendeva ipersensibile nei loro confronti e i bambini li trattava da adulti, mai paternale con loro, sono anche famosi i racconti dei suoi schiaffi per farli piangere… erano tecniche, gli diceva:” Tu adesso devi piangere!” “Ma io non lo so fare”! E allora via uno schaffo nelle scene dove era necessario piangere… poi se li abbracciava forte e diceva scusa amore non lo volevo fare!!! Erano tecniche! Ma lui li amava moltissimo..

E loro erano contenti! Diventavano veri attori! Ancora adesso Staiola lo incontro, parlo del bambino con quegli occhi molto grandi del film Ladri di biciclette!!!

Amava i giovani moltissimo poiché sapeva che erano il futuro. Lui gli diceva: “ Siate agguerriti, siate forti, abbiate fame, un pò gli stessi discorsi che dopo molti anni ha fatto Steve Jobs. Ricordo questo desiderio: “ La fame aiuta l’agio , non vi sedete, siate felici e ricercate cose un pò più difficili, anche irraggiungibili”. Sappiamo quanto mio nonno fosse stato ostacolato da alcune esternazioni del public establishment ai suoi film del tipo i panni sporchi si lavano in famiglia, non raccontiamo le cose dell’Italia e lui diceva: “ No io devo raccontare, devo dire le cose come sono, il vero realismo”.

Durante la conferenza stampa ha detto: “In questa stanza del Rinascimento visto che mio nonno era neorealista speriamo di trovare un nuovo neo neo realismo e che questa stanza sia una rinascita del cinema. Ci sono i presupposti di una rinascita nel cinema? Come vede il cinema del futuro?

Nell’entusiasmo, nella passione nei giovani nel sottobosco, nel web, nelle cose piccole. I ragazzi ci sono! C’è dietro una macchina commerciale che vuole solo lucro! Quando si capirà che il cinema si può fare con una macchina da presa “presa a calci” per farla partire come nei film muti, si può fare tutto. Lei pensi che tra i giovani che assistevano alle riprese di mio nonno c’era Ettore Scola il quale racconta che un giorno mentre andava a scuola vide un nuvolo di gente a Piazza Vittorio e osservò da lontano mio nonno che girava Ladri di biciclette, non andò a scuola e si fermò a vedere e decise quel giorno che sarebbe diventato regista. I giovani devono avere la voglia di andare, fare e di appassionarsi. Il cinema del futuro sarà un cinema piccolo, una esplosione realista che racconta piccole storie, non pensieri complicati, si raccontano storie che hanno un piccolo inizio e un subito fine, sono piccole storie sussurrate, poi potranno essere un trampolino di lancio e diventare un grande urlo!

Suo nonno è stato una figura di riferimento… Ci sono ancora?

Quando ci si spoglia come fece San Francesco da tutta questa macchina commerciale, forse si darà più spazio a ottime intenzioni. I giovani ci sono, sono bravi e sanno comunicare, l’espressione ce ne è tanta: arte, scrittura, fotografia, cinema, i contenuti ci sono, li dobbiamo liberare da tutti gli interessi economici, allora il cinema avrà un futuro.

Quale è il manifesto di un film di suo nonno che meglio lo incarna nell’anima e nello stile e lo rappresenta…

Vorrei dirti quello che ho in casa io che è il manifesto di Umberto D ovvero Umberto De Sica, dedicato a suo padre. Pensate mio nonno aveva già il posto pronto in Banca d’Italia, ma a venti anni disse a Suo padre che voleva lavorare a teatro e seguire il carrozzone degli attori con Tatiana Pavlov che era una compagnia di saltimbanchi e Umberto De Sica invece di dire tu sei pazzo vai a lavorare in banca, gli disse vai! Lo incoraggiò a fare il salto nel vuoto. E quindi lui ha dedicato questo film a suo padre. Ma il film, il manifesto, la locandina, l’immagine che più rappresenta secondo me la filmografia e la filosofia di Vittorio De Sica è Maggiorani con la mano del bambino in Ladri di biciclette, perché è questo rapporto silenzioso di mascelle che si stringono, di sguardi , di piccole cose impercettibili! Io davanti agli occhi di mio figlio che rubo una bicicletta e poi… Ti perdono papà e risucchio il naso!

Films che a distanza di anni emozionano sempre…

Raccontava tante cose piccole, semplici da raccogliere, nulla di intimista! Raccontava del padre che ha un lavoro, lo perde e compie quel gesto di rubare una bicicletta, piccole cose ma che sono grandi. Quella scena racconta un mondo di emozioni e pensieri, contesto sociale, tutto!

Ladri di biciclette ora più che mai è attuale!

Quante persone ora si trovano in quella situazione e sono tentati a fare un gesto insano, sono piccole situazioni quotidiane e risuonano dentro di noi perché le abbiamo vissute e le possiamo potenzialmente vivere tutti.

Qual’era il rapporto di suo nonno con le donne?

Le amava davvero e loro amavano lui, le faceva felici e le conquistava tutte, tutte innamorate di lui, mia mamma racconta che quando per qualsiasi ragione nonno era vicino ad una donna, il gesto che significava “mi piaci” era un puffetto dolce sulla guancia mentre diceva: “Sei carina!!!” Significava che di lì a poco sarebbero finite nel letto!! Era un gesto carino, paterno, però significava la conquista. Lui era molto tombeur de femmes.

Gelosia di sua nonna?

No.. anzi mia nonna sua prima moglie Giuditta Rissone era la più grande confidente di mio nonno, le raccontava tutto! Arrivava da mia nonna e chiedeva consiglio e diceva: “Titta ho sbagliato, ho mandato due lettere a mie fidanzate e ho incrociato le buste”! E mia nonna rispondeva: “ Ma Vittorio devi stare attento!” Si sono amati molto, moltissimo fino alla fine, infatti sono sepolti vicino.

Ci racconta un gesto bello di suo nonno nei suoi confronti? Qualè la prima cosa che le viene in mente e non scorderà mai? Il primo pensiero.

Forse quando l’ho visto l’ultima volta! Era malato aveva un cancro ai polmoni all’epoca non si sopravviveva e andai a trovarlo con mamma, avevo 7 anni e lui fece un gesto che racconta la grandezza di mio nonno, la sua anima delicata e buona. Era a letto nella sua seconda casa, andai a fare con mia mamma un salutino al nonno perché non poteva più venire a prendere il caffè da noi. Non riusciva a respirava e aveva un tubicino per la bombola dell’ossigeno, in quel momento non ho capito la delicatezza del suo gesto, l’ho capita anni dopo, appena aperto la porta mi ha visto si è girato e si è tolto la mascherina e l’ha nascosta cosi non vedevo una cosa chirurgica, malata, come per dire si potrebbe spaventare la bambina, il gesto non era per mamma era per me.

Un gesto di alta dignità

Ma più che dignità è stato un gesto di protezione per me.

Era un uomo molto protettivo?

Lo era con tutti, anche con i bambini che non conosceva, con i bambini di Napoli che filmava.

Per finire scendiamo nel profondo del cuore qual è il ricordo più significativo di suo nonno vissuto con lo sguardo di bambina e quindi indelebile?

La sensazione del profumo di caffè.

Veniva a pranzo da mamma e poi faceva il riposino dopo pranzo nella camera dove ho dormito io. Mi avevano affidato il compito di svegliarlo con il vassoio del caffè, lui era di origine campana. Il rituale era che lui si svegliava piano, aveva il plaid di cashmere marrone e io ricorderò sempre il profumo di questo cashmere e di questo caffè, lui si svegliava, beveva e mi lasciava un anellino di caffè zuccheroso. Questo era il nostro piccolo momento intimo di condivisione, solo nostro. Poi mi ricordo i giochi, le piroette mentre ballavo, mi esibivo, lui mi dava “i punti”: “Ma no lo facevi meglio prima!”Altro ricordo quello del set: andai con mia madre e fu uno shock, vedere questa grande luce con la Loren vestita come un cioccolatino, Richard Burton con sedici bottiglie di vodka… Quando cominciai a lavorare nel cinema capii l’importanza della luce ed ebbi un flashback fortissimo. Di piccoli ricordi di mio nonno ne ho tanti, ma il film forte sponsoriale è stato, non so se si può dire, ma è stato l’anellino di caffè zuccheroso che con il suo dolce sorriso mi lasciava !!!
