Un po’ di noia, se sopportata in nome di una grande passione, può essere salutare. Ma quel che si sta compiendo nella nostra scuola è una strage dell’arte e della letteratura. Ci sono certo molti bravi docenti, ma io credo che alle superiori bisogna cambiare radicalmente il modo di proporre. A 15 anni non puoi amare dante per obbligo. Devi poter incontrare un adulto che attraverso il suo amore e la sua umanità ferita dai capolavori te li faccia amare. Per questo propongo che la letteratura intesa come testi letti insieme, gusto di interpretare etc. sia una materia dapprima presentata per un po’ di tempo ai ragazzi, da docenti chiamati dalla scuola a contratto e poi lasciata alla scelta facoltativa dei ragazzi. Se il docente è bravo i ragazzi lo seguiranno, se no la scuola cambierà docente. Noi ora stiamo seppellendo il gusto per le cose belle e profonde tra i nostri ragazzi. E questo per l’Italia -che non ha da tramandare materie prime, ma arte e gusto- è un suicidio.

La sua proposta potrebbe essere sperimentata nelle scuole. Qual è il criterio per cui si decide se un professore è bravo o meno. Un docente potrebbe avere carisma e non insegnare bene…

I ragazzi non sono scemi. E chi deve vigilerà.

Lei che fa molte conferenze fra i giovani e che conosce bene il mondo della scuola, c’è una differenza qualitativa tra la scuola pubblica e quella privata?

Ci sono differenze tra scuole buone e scuole scarse. La differenza la fanno le persone. Alcune -non tutte- scuole private sono contrassegnate da una bella forza grazie alla possibilità di scegliersi insegnanti bravi e motivati.

Molti italiani agiati economicamente mandano sempre più i loro figli a studiare in Inghilterra, è solo una moda o la scuola inglese istruisce meglio della nostra.

I problemi degli inglesi sono forse maggiori dei nostri. Più che una moda, è il segno di un sentimento che di là passi il futuro e di qui solo crisi. Ma credo sia sbagliato.

A differenza di molti intellettuali che criticano senza dare risposte, lei ha una proposta ?

La proposta dell’insegnamento facoltativo della letteratura nelle scuole superiori è un modo con cui gli insegnanti sono chiamati a dare il meglio di sè.

Considerando che siamo esseri originali e diversi secondo lei un ragazzo oggi cosa dovrebbe fare e non fare per riuscire a cavalcare l’onda in questo tipo di società?

Non si tratta di cavalcare l’onda, ma di avere il senso della vastità del mare. Un ragazzo è importante che incontri adulti con il senso dell’avventura del mare, e con il rispetto del mistero del mare.
